baking powder biscuits
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 2 tsp sugar
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 beaten egg for glazing
Into large bowl, sift flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. With pastry blender, cut in shortening until coarse crumbs form.
Add milk to shortening-flour mixture with fork; stir until mixture forms soft dough that leaves sides of the bowl.
Turn out dough onto lightly floured surface and knead 10 times. With floured rolling pin, roll out to 1/2" thickness. Cut dough with cutter and place 1" apart on ungreased baking sheet. Glaze with 1 beaten egg.
Bake in 450°F oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
